Designing for Agentic AI: The Future of UX/UI

The way we think about user-experiences and user-interfaces is evolving rapidly. With the rise of agentic AI systems that act autonomously, make decisions, take initiative the role of UI/UX is shifting from guiding tasks to enabling collaboration.
In these systems, users don’t just issue commands; they set outcomes. The agent perceives context, reasons, remembers, adapts, and acts.
Interfaces become more than tools: they become the bridge between human intent and autonomous execution.
What is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to systems that are goal-driven, context-aware, and capable of independent action. They aren’t simply “smart tools” or passive assistants — they anticipate, plan ahead, and adapt their behaviour over time.
Unlike traditional software — where each user step is defined — in agentic systems users express what they want, and the system figures out how to achieve it.
Examples of use-cases include:
- A sales rep simply says: “Get me ready for my 11am call,” and the agent collates relevant emails, metrics, talking points.
- A support agent that pulls CRM data, order status, policy rules, and issues a refund automatically when criteria match.
For businesses — especially SMEs — this offers time savings, context-continuity across tools, and fewer manual clicks.
Core Principles for Designing Agentic AI UI

When designing for agentic systems, the UX/UI shifts. Here are nine key principles drawn from both sources:

Rather than guiding users step-by-step, the focus is on enabling users to express a desired outcome, and let the agent handle the steps. - Clear, Ongoing Communication
